Venice The Photogenic City – A Photo Essay

Venice could be easily the most photogenic city in the world. A friend of mine said that Venice did not look as good in real life compared to what we see in photographs. Another said that it looked decaying and old in real life. And to be fair, it is. The island city of Venice is crumbling and sinking into the lagoon in which it is located.

So if you always intend to visit and have not, I’d say, go! Go now! Because Venice might be gone in the next couple of decades!

At this point the city is constantly struggling with flood. I found flooding Venice pictures everywhere there, in restaurants and hostels. Ironically, Venice looks even prettier (if that’s possible) in the flood, with majestic – albeit decaying – buildings reflected in glimmering water. The term “Elegant decay” cannot be more fitted to this over a millennium old city.

Venice of today is run like a cultural theme-park, a medieval Disneyland. It almost lost all of its local residents, making the city a popular place only for tourists and visitors, full of “rides” and expensive restaurants. I was struggling to find anything that resembled a supermarket, not even a small one. The only one that we found after a long walk, was closed. In the middle of the day. The locals can no longer afford to stay in Venice, and for us it was by far the most expensive 3-4 days for our North Italy trip. Milan did not even come close. Venice prices were so far off compared to the rest of Italy.

Despite all that, Venice is truly one of a kind. A city so different, so in the league of its own, that you do need to see it to believe it. Below is my effort to capture this beauty, and hope they speak for themselves. (Click on the pics to enlarge)
